Binary returns in “Captain Marvel” #38 with design by Russell Dauterman • AIPT

Marvel Comics has announced that Captain Marvel’s current story arc “The Last of the Marvels” will end with Captain Marvel #36 which marked the return of Genis-Vell and the re-emergence of Binary. In Captain Marvel #38, out May 5, Binary takes over from Captain Marvel in a story by Kelly Thompson, Juan Frigeri, and Álvaro López.

“I’m really excited about this wild new arc for Carol and Binary — it’s called TRIALS — and let me tell you, these ladies are going through it,” Thompson said. “Carol Danvers’ time as Binary has been one of her most compelling – and also one of her best and most powerful looks. And while Carol harnesses that power at times – it’s a name and a a look that sat on the shelf, unused – so we thought, why not have both? There’s no reason we can’t have Captain Marvel and also Binary – and with that, the wheels have started spinning on creating this awesome new character. It’s been such a fun ride so far and there’s so much more in store for her!

what Captain Marvel #38 about?

Carol’s disappearance has left the newly sentient binary to fill, but stepping into the shoes of one of Earth’s greatest heroes is no small feat. As Binary finds herself thrust into a world she barely understands, questions about exactly who and what Binary is deepen. And where IS Captain Marvel anyway?!

“I was very happy to design this!” Dauterman said. “Love the original Dave Cockrum design (since I first saw Binary, when she punched Rogue through a roof!) – I wanted to keep that vibe, but modernize the look a bit and incorporate a part of Carol’s current iconography.”
