Blackmagic Design’s URSA Mini Pro 12K digital cameras and ATEM Constellation 8K live production switchers used for ‘Life Is Beautiful’ and ‘Outside Lands’ music festivals

Blackmagic Design today announced that production company Fortress Entertainment used Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K digital cameras and ATEM Constellation 8K live production switchers, along with a host of additional Blackmagic Design gear, to capture of images and the live broadcast of two of the greatest musical successes in the world. festivals, Life Is Beautiful and Outside Lands.

Los Angeles-based Fortress Entertainment is a leader in live music streaming and broadcast production, having worked with some of the world’s biggest artists including Harry Styles, DJ Khaled and Charlie XCX. Two of his recent projects include the Life Is Beautiful festival in downtown Las Vegas, with Billie Eilish, Green Day and Glass Animals, and Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, with Lizzo, J Balvin and Tyler, The Creator. . With three stages and one host station, each festival was streamed live to millions of viewers exclusively in partnership with Twitch.

Fortress Entertainment producer and director Devin DeHaven and his team installed 12 URSA Mini Pro 12Ks at each festival, fitted with a combination of EF, PL and B4 mounts to allow for a range of lenses. Cameras were spread across three stages, with each stage also fitted with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro digital camera on a slider for audience-point-of-view shots or wide shots of the stage.

According to DeHaven, the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pros added a lot of atmosphere to the performances as they could be used unobtrusively from the audience’s perspective and allowed the crew to get footage of the stage through their heads and eyes. hands of the crowd. Three Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pros were also used at the host station for behind-the-scenes interviews and special programming throughout the festivals.

Camera feeds were sent to a control room comprising two ATEM Constellation 8K, each paired with an ATEM 2 M/E Advanced Panel, an ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K live production switcher paired with an ATEM 1 M /E Advanced Panel, and an ATEM Television Studio Pro 4K live production switcher for host station feeds. Two 12×12 Smart Videohub routers were also placed under each floor as a hub to centralize all camera feeds and then route them to the switches in the control room. 42 mini 12G-SDI fiber optic converters completed the workflow, sending camera feeds down a fiber path to the front of each room.

“Fortress’ use of Blackmagic Design gear has allowed us to reinvent the way live music shows and festivals are approached. Using Blackmagic Design products fits perfectly with the Fortress approach to festival production, as both companies offer a disruptive methodology,” said DeHaven. “We’ve focused on tools that allow more of the spend to appear on screen and create a signature cinematic look, including cameras, switchers, and cinema glass, while embracing a technical approach. to take advantage of cloud control room solutions. This combination has allowed our festival partners to use less infrastructure, increase their profits and have less impact on the resources of all departments affected by a live broadcast.

In addition to Life Is Beautiful and Outside Lands, the Fortress team has also used the same workflow for several other recent events, including Slipknot’s Knotfest on Veeps, Welcome to Rockville on Twitch, and Will Smith Philadelphia “Will” Book Tour Stop on Veeps, reaching several million cumulative views.

“We found that the scalability and centralized control of Blackmagic Design products was critical to executing our live strategy,” said DeHaven. “A key indicator of the success of our approach has been the universal love for the look and feel of our productions. Using Blackmagic Design products and cinematic lenses, as well as asking our directors and creatives to lean into a more docufilm approach, has set us apart from all of our competitors, giving viewers an experience that feels more like a physical presence. We’ve heard from many promoters, artist managers and stakeholders from the platform telling us how amazing our shows were.”

Festival producer for Outside Lands and Life Is Beautiful, Rae Livingston of Another Planet Entertainment, added, “Fortress is a dream to work with. They have this perfect combination of creativity and technical expertise. As a bonus, their technology allows them to maintain an agile production and low-profile footprint that is essential when festival real estate is limited. Fortress gets in there, does it and makes it amazing.

Danny Hayes, CEO of Danny Wimmer Presents, which produced the Welcome to Rockville festival, concluded, “Fortress was able to bring elevated visuals to our live festival stream that reassured artists that their image and performance were broadcast at the highest level of excellence. Fortress made it easy to incorporate cinema-style techniques into a live music atmosphere.
