Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey stars in Radio Times

In this week Radio schedules, Kirsty Lang interviews Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey. As the hottest costume drama returns to our screens, Season 2 (available to stream on Netflix from March 25) follows Viscount Bridgerton’s search for a wife – but is Jonathan Bailey ready for his moment? Mr. Darcy?

Bailey discusses the valuable advice co-star Phoebe Dynevor gave him regarding the effort to helm the show – and how he’ll continue that legacy by passing on a notebook he kept throughout filming to the next in line.

Charithra Chandran, who plays Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton season 2, also explains how the costume drama has revolutionized attitudes towards casting diversity: “We often allude to minorities as being there to tick boxes, to fulfill a quota. I can’t tell you how amazing it is. It’s crippling. It gets into our minds and makes us feel like we don’t deserve to succeed.

“I had people in college say to me, ‘You only got the lead on this show because they needed a person of color. It makes you doubt everything. If I’m really honest and vulnerable, in my head I’m like, ‘Oh my God, if people don’t like me in this or if I did a bad job, I ruined it for all my community. When you’re a minority, you invariably feel the weight of representing your whole community. It’s not imposed by anyone, but it’s something I feel.

Nobody expects him to be successful all the time, but it’s 2022 now and I think we can all do better.
