How to make a DIY leather notebook cover

Keep your favorite notebook in style with this vegan leather diy notebook cover. The subtle lavender hue will add a charming and unexpected romantic touch to an otherwise dull planner or journal.

Tools:
  • Scissors
  • Rule
  • Sewing needle
  • Pencil
Materials:
  • Lavender faux leather
  • Silver collar studs
  • Gray wire

Gather your tools. You will need the lavender faux leather, a silver collar nail, thread, scissors, pencil, ruler, sewing needle, and a standard journal or notebook .

This piece of leather will cover an 8.5 “x 5” or smaller notebook. If your edges are uneven, use a ruler, draw a straight line near the edge of the faux leather, and cut a small strip.

Cut a 12-inch piece of thread and thread your sewing needle. Tie a triple knot at the end of the thread.

Fit and size the faux leather around your notebook. You create a small pocket for the front cover. It should fold back at least an inch.

Start sewing the top of the jacket flap down. Start at the inside corner to hide your knot. You will then continue for the entire length of the top with a running stitch.

Try to keep your points an equal distance from each other and from the top of the notebook.

When you reach the end, pull your thread inside the flap.

Tie a secure double knot around the last stitch on the inside of the flap.

Cut the excess thread and repeat the operation for the bottom of the jacket flap.

Using a ruler as a guide, mark a point in the middle of the top of the jacket flap where the stud will go, at least 1 ” from the edge.

Slide gently on the top flap to make a mark in the same spot on the bottom flap.

Very carefully, pinch the leather to have easy access to the spot you marked and use your scissors to cut a small hole. If you have a rotary screw or punch this would be a great time to use it!

For the top hole, you can very carefully cut out a small circle. This is where the stud will go, so make sure it’s not too big or the flap won’t be secure.

Cut the same size slit on the bottom flap where you marked with a pencil.

Place a silver screw stud through the bottom of the bottom jacket flap and secure the top of the stud to the other side.

Slide on the notepad of your choice.

Close tightly and put your new improved journal in your tote.

Also works if you have a smaller notebook!
