Loretta Lynn Covers Hank Williams’ ‘Your Cheatin’ Heart’

Loretta Lynn blessed us with a stunning cover of Hank Williams’ classic (and standard) country hit “Your Cheatin’ Heart” as she performed it live on an episode of The Wilburn Brothers Show. Don Helms, a steel guitarist best known for his performances with Hank Williams (as part of the artist’s band Drifting Cowboys), also joined the live band. The song was included as the fifth track on Loretta Lynn’s 1966 album I love them country.

Throughout history

It was 1952. Country artist Hank Williams was enjoying a string of hits with “Honky Tonk Blues”, “Half as Much”, “Settin’ the Woods on Fire”, “Jambalaya (On the Bayou)” and “You Win again.” But success came with a struggle as Hank developed serious problems with alcohol, morphine and painkillers just to relieve his back pain. And the impact of that struggle shattered his marriage to Audrey Sheppard.

Then came Billie Jean Jones. Williams met the Louisiana native backstage at Ryman Auditorium, who at the time was still dating country music artist and producer Faron Young. When Jones and Young’s relationship ended, Williams stepped in and began dating Jones. And it didn’t take long for the two to talk about marriage. And one day, as they drove from Nashville to Shreveport to announce their plans to Jones’ family, Williams told him about his previous marriage and described Audrey Sheppard as a cheater and one day she will have to pay. The conversation quickly turned into a songwriting session as Williams took inspiration from the line. He asked Jones to take his notebook and write down the lyrics as he dictated them to him.

And the rest is history.
