Tottenham are reportedly in contact over a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha – but his reduced asking price has also reportedly alerted two Premier League rivals.
The transfer window has been extremely frustrating for Tottenham boss Antonio Conte so far. Looking to make his mark on the team, he has to ride and negotiate to bring in better quality players. However, with just six days remaining, Spurs manager Fabio Paratici is yet to strike gold.
Thus, a report published on Monday affirms Conte pressures Tottenham for four signings before window closes.
And while that sounds a bit ambitious, Conte admits Spurs lack the quality of squad that many of their Premier League rivals have.
Strengthening their squad, however, proved difficult. Efforts to sign Franck Kessie appear to have failed, while links with Georginio Wijnaldum seem far from the truth.
According to reports from Portugal, however, Tottenham could be happy with a planned move for Palhinha.
The Sporting Lisbon midfielder is a long-term target for clubs, emerging as a player of interest under Jose Mourinho.
At the time, Sporting valued the 26-year-old midfielder at £33.5m (€40m).
However, his value has reportedly fallen slightly since then, with his asking price set at £25m (€30m).
And the reduced fees are, according to Registration, would have alerted the Spurs.
The midfielder has ‘one foot out of the door’
They claim that Paratici is already in contact with the player’s agent over a possible move. Furthermore, the Portuguese outlet claims that Palhinha already has “one foot out of the door”.
However, Spurs are far from the only ones to make contact with Palhinha.
Indeed, the report claims that Manchester United and Wolves have also contacted the player’s agent over a potential move.
Moreover, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid also seem keen on his signing.
They claim Sporting are open to selling him if the asking price is met, with the player seemingly open to any move.
They write, however, that it is his “dream” to play in the Premier League, making him one of those three real contenders.
Bruno Fernandes a big fan of Joao Palhinha
Manchester United have other irons in the fire when it comes to midfielders. Indeed, their boss Ralf Rangnick is strongly linked with move for Amadou Haidara from RB Leipzig, which matched his high-intensity style.
One advantage United might have, however, is their strong Portuguese contingent. The Red Devils already have Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes.
The last of them, Fernandes, is said to be a great admirer of Palhinha’s talents. As such, he would love to play alongside him at club level as well as for Portugal as well.
Palhinha, a Tiger central midfielder, has three goals in 24 appearances for Sporting this season. He has also been in the referee’s book seven times this season.
