Texas Design Week Houston — Kimberly Whitman and Shelley Johnstone sign A Loving Table, Plus Kitchen Confidential Hosted by Monogram

Tablescapes to die for

Setting a beautiful table is, for some, practically a competitive sport. But for the most gracious hosts, it is always, in one way or another, a tribute: a nod to those who came before them – the mothers, grandmothers and others who worked to integrate tradition, memories and beauty into everyday life. Whether it’s an heirloom china set or the passing on of a long-standing holiday tradition, there’s love in the details.

Kimberley Schlegel Whitman and Shelley Johnstone-Paschkethe new book, A Loving Table: Creating Memorable Gatherings (Gibbs Smith), follows 34 elegant women and how they honor tradition when they entertain. According to the introduction, “Women all over the world celebrate the other women in their families with little nods when they entertain. This book is a tribute to all the lessons we have learned and the styles we have adopted women into our lives.

With a foreword by the designer Mark D. Sikes and a range of tables created by designers Alessandra Branca, Lisa Fine, January Showers, Cathy KincaidSchumacher’s creative director Dara Caponigro, Princess Diana of Orleans of Portugal, and Niven Breen Chesie Breenthere is enough inspiration for several generations.

Kimberly Whitman and Shelley Johnstone-PaschkWe will sign copies of A loving table following an illustrated conference Thursday April 28from 10 a.m. to noon, at Longoria-Collection.
