Warning to shoppers about steep price hikes on 34 popular Christmas gifts this year – full list


Covid restrictions and delivery delays are pushing Christmas gift prices up to 41%, new data has just been released.

Production interruptions and transportation bottlenecks mean that many items sell out quickly in stores, which in turn drives up the costs of technology, toys, home accessories, clothing, etc.

New data from the price comparison site Idealo compared prices in December and the same month last year to see the financial impact of the shortages.

Those looking to give a VR headset as a gift this Christmas will see the biggest price increase of up to 41%. Coffee machines, karaoke machines, speakers, and dollhouses have also skyrocketed.

Apple Airpods 2 prices rose 29%, along with other price hikes such as children’s bikes (28%), video games like Call Of Duty Cold War, (13%) TVs (12%) ) and refrigerators (10 percent), all of which have high prices now compared to December 2020.

However, a small number of products such as laptops (23%), musical instruments (19%), and LEGOs, including the Star Wars Millennium Falcon and Frozen Elsa’s Magical Ice Palace, have dropped in price.

Katy Phillips, Head of Brand and Communications at idealo commented: “Unfortunately, the spike in Covid-19 cases is causing lockdowns across Europe and beyond.

“Manufacturing processes are slowing down and it is becoming increasingly difficult to get items in demand to the UK in time for Christmas, so prices are rising across the board.

“We hope our data will show which giveaways to avoid this year, as they could get cheaper in the new year once suppliers catch up with demand.

She added: “It’s not all pessimistic though – there are items like perfume and aftershaves that are actually cheaper at the moment, which means they could be the giveaway choice. must-have for saving money while on vacation.

“We recommend that you use Price Alerts to track the cost of your wanted items over time and check the quantity of products on other sites to make sure you’re getting the best price.

“If you have understanding family and friends, you can always wait until 2022 to purchase the gift cheaply.”
